Posted by Ernesto (Ernie) Raj Peshkov-Chow, Yesterday, on TheTyee.ca and forwarded to The CEP Local 10b Blog by brother Keith Barry. Keith quotes a comment posted on this article that sums it all up …… “This should be memorized by every mother’s son (or daughter)  who is a wage earner!”

Here’s the link to the article: Yelling Back at Radio!  Please feel free to comment below.

Discipline & Safety!

January 11th, 2011

Brothers & Sisters,

Over the last few years your JSC reps have worked very hard to establish an agreement with the company that no disciple would arise out of any safety initiative. This is very important as the threat of discipline could deter people from coming forward or visiting first aid after an incident and that would prevent us from learning from the incident and putting good corrective actions in place to prevent it from happening again. The company agreed. The initiatives were defined as information from a member, first aids, near misses and incident investigations.

Early in 2010 a major lock out violation prompted the company to back track on our agreement. At that point everything stayed the same with the exception that near misses would no longer protect employees from discipline with respect to serious lock out violations.

More recently, another incident occurred and the employee immediately notified his supervisor – the individual was disciplined. …….continue reading!

Telus Unethical Billing?

December 30th, 2010

An interesting developement has started with Telus. They have anounced a $2.00 bill charge to customers that choose a paper bill over electronic billing! Telus said that it did not want to penalize the customers that use electronic billing because they help reduce processing costs.

This has to be illegal! ……. continue reading!

Your Right to Privacy vs. OSHA!

December 9th, 2010

Brothers and Sisters,

On Tuesday December 7, 2010 the company informed us that they would like our support in their request to discus confidential personal medical information (pre existing conditions) with employees that have been injured. They claim that this is necessary because the standard of reporting recordable incidents that they must follow (OSHA) is an American standard which puts them at a disadvantage statistically when compared to other mills. By the OSHA standard information indicating a pre existing condition may allow a current recordable incident to be re classified as a non recordable.

In an attempt to help the company with this issue ……. continue reading!

Modified Work Accommodations Greivance

November 16th, 2010

Local10b is fortunate to have one of the best duty to accommodate programs in the Province (Modified /transitional Work Programs). This program can be found in our JLA under local agreements. We do how ever run into issues every now and then and we presently have a grievance in regarding Rates of Pay .

Safety Eyewear Policy Changes

November 1st, 2010

Hi Everyone,

A couple of weeks ago we received quite a few questions from the floor regarding company announced changes to our Safety Eye-wear Policy. Quite honestly, the questions caught us completely off guard as we hadn’t heard anything about any changes to the policy at JSC and we were pretty sure that we had resolved the issue around unilateral changes to safety policies with the company.

Bob Patterson and Eric Ashby were away that week so we started asking around but no one seemed to know anything about it. JeFF sent an email to Bob Patterson requesting information on the changes as well as an explanation as to why any changes were made prior to the issue being discussed at JSC but he did not get a reply. Finally, at our monthly JSC meeting last Tuesday, we expressed our concerns and got an answer to our question. … read the rest of the post now >>
